Teaching Guitar makes up a large part of what I do, and it’s something I’ve been doing since I was 16, so I take pride in doing as good a job as possible. I give lessons on Valley Road, in the heart of Meersbrook, Sheffield, South Yorkshire. I also do home visits (on foot where possible) to some areas of South Sheffield, including Meersbrook, Heeley, Woodseats, Nether Edge, Sharrow and Eccleshall.
Learning an instrument should always be focused on what you want to get out of it, not solely what someone else tells you is the best approach. That’s why I try to tailor your lessons to focus on what you’re interested in. My experience teaching has showed me that if you’re enjoying what you’re studying, you’re likely to work harder and achieve more.
I teach beginner to advanced level in two main ‘streams’ or pathways, which can be followed exclusively or mixed up depending on your needs. If you’re interested in working towards grades and qualifications, I’m one of a few teachers who can teach to a variety of exam schemes – I can enter you for
- ABRSM or LCM in Classical Guitar up to Diploma Level
- Rock School or RGT Rock Guitar up to Grade 6
- RGT Fingerstlyle guitar up to Diploma Level
- RGT electric guitar up to Grade 6
My fee for all lessons is £20 per 50 minutes, or £15 30 minutes, with discounts available for block bookings and small group lessons of up to three pupils.
1. Classical Guitar
My main background, based on an established finger-style technique, takes in musical notation and theory. Having at least a basic grasp of classical guitar technique can turn an aspiring heavy metal rock god into an all-round musical maestro. It also helps build a thorough knowledge of the instrument (notes, positions, chords etc) and can link in nicely to developing a great folk/jazz/blues/acoustic finger-picking technique.
2. Contemporary Guitar
Starting with chords, progressions and rhythm guitar before progressing to single note playing, riffs and solos, this approach gives you the key skills needed to play almost any song written in the last 100 years. If you want to see fast results, and are willing to put in the effort you could be playing some of your favourite songs in a matter of weeks, and playing them really well in months! We can agree what musical genre, band or songs you want to use to study, and they will become the basis of your lessons.
