Here are a few answers to questions you might have about learning guitar with me @ Little Sheffield Guitar Studio…
How much will lessons cost?
I try to keep my costs as reasonable as possible, as I understand music lessons aren’t cheap! I offer simple options for pay as you go lessons:
30 minute lessons – £15
50 minute lessons – £20.
You can ‘pay as you go’ in cash, or if you’d rather pay in blocks I offer the following options, which can be paid for in advance in cash or BACS transfer. Each block booking works out at about 10% cheaper:
4 x 50 minute lessons @£70 per block booking (£10 / 15% discount)
4 x 30 minute lessons @£54 per block booking (£6 / 10% discount)
I do groups sessions – so, if parents would like to learn with their little uns, or siblings or friends, or even just a couple of mates who want to chip in and form a band! Add £5 per person to the pay as you go price.
For home visits there is an extra charge for travel time added to the above prices, so please ask for details.
Where are you based?
The studio is in my home on Valley Road, off Chesterfield Road, Meersbrook. The postcode is S8 9GA.
It’s easily reached by public transport from the city centre (via the following buses, which stop on Chesterfield Road, a two minute walk): 20, 20A, 24, 25, 25A, 43, 43A, 44, 44A, and the magic 10, which runs from the Hallamshire Hospital to Manor Top and drops off on Valley Road, right by the house.
I give a 10% discount for all lessons where you arrive on foot, pedal, pedal power, or public transport (I have spare guitars for you to use if you don’t want to risk your guitar on two wheels!) why? because I love clean air.
Or…Driving, it’s very easy to find, as it’s just off Chesterfield Road – the road turning is more or less opposite Lidl. Use the following Post code and Street number for the Sat Nav: Valley Road, S8 9GA.
There is limited free on-street parking during the day, and evening.
I also do home visits, to some areas of Sheffield. Beyond Nether Edge / Woodseats / Gleadless / Heeley will incur a slight fee for petrol and travel time, but local to Meersbrook (especially if I can fit you in to my walking visits) is free of charge!
What times and days can I have an appointment?
Lessons can be booked during the following times:
Monday 10am – 8pm
Tuesday 10am – 8pm (please note, some weeks there are football matches at Bramhall Lane, which can cause traffic issues in the evening)
Wednesday 10am – 8pm
Thursday 10am – 8pm
Friday 10am – 5pm
I don’t usually teach over the weekend, but occasionally arrangements can be made to fit lessons in for exam preparation, or to make up for missed sessions.
Are you qualified to teach the guitar?
Yes! I studied music, both classical and popular, to degree level, getting a BA in Music from the University of Liverpool. I also have a Performance Diploma in the Classical Guitar, and did a PGCE at Edge Hill University in 2006. I’ve been teaching guitar for around 20 years now (*cough* showing my age there!) so I have bags of experience working with clients.
I’m always developing myself as a teacher, and am currently working towards becoming a fellow of the RCM (learning some really lovely but really hard pieces!).
As well as the formal qualifications, I’ve learnt from some great teachers, and have lots of experience both teaching and playing music.
Why should I choose you over other tutors in the area?
I’m a full-time teacher and guitarist, so music really is my life! Sheffield has a good number of excellent tutors working in the city, and it’s a competitive market, but I feel my skills and experience make me a great fit, particularly if you’re interested in:
The Classical Guitar – I can play and teach to a really high level, and I’m excellent at bringing the very best out of you! There aren’t many Classical Guitar specialists in Sheffield, so come see me first if you’re a budding Segovia.
Fingerstyle genres – such as folk, country and acoustic blues. My classical background gives me a great insight into right hand technique.
Beginners guitar – because I’m a complete technique ‘geek’ I take a thorough and rigorous approach to get you started playing the guitar, which I believe will set you up to be a stronger player in the long-run.
Is Guitar the only thing you teach?
Nope, I can teach music theory, national curriculum music, songwriting, arranging for guitar, performance practice and recording. I have a few specialist offers including record a song for £50, and troubleshooting sessions. Just email me to ask if there’s anything musical you need help with.
